Verified 23 August 2026 against g.a.s.t. and APS India.

The dMAT ran for the first time in 2026. That is the whole explanation for what follows: a large amount of guidance was written quickly, early, and from each other rather than from the primary sources, and several errors have now been copied far enough to look like consensus.

Below is every claim we have found repeated that does not survive contact with the official material, each with the correction, the source, and the date we checked it. We have deliberately not named the publishers. The point is the claim, not the culprit — and some of these pages will quietly be right again next month.

How to use this page. If a guide, counsellor or coaching centre tells you something that contradicts a row below, do not take our word for it either. Every correction names the source. Go and read it: d-mat.de for the exam itself, aps-india.de/dmat for who has to take it.

1. "Your subject module matches your bachelor's degree"

Wrong. Every Indian APS candidate sits the same General Academic Module. There is no engineering module, no commerce module and no business module in the APS India route.

This is the most consequential error in circulation, because it sends people looking for engineering revision material for a test that contains none. Pages titled "dMAT Engineering Syllabus" are describing something that does not exist for this cohort.

Subject-specific modules do exist — Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and others. They are used by individual German universities for particular degree programmes that choose to require one. They are not part of the APS documentation route that brought you here. Confirmed on d-mat.de, checked 23 August 2026.

The practical consequence: the General Academic Module tests reasoning about unfamiliar academic material, not knowledge of your field. Short scenarios, a passage or a small data set, questions tied to that material. It is much closer to GRE or GMAT reading-and-reasoning than to anything you sat at university. More on that in our General Academic Module guide.

2. "Every dMAT question is single-choice with four options"

Wrong on two of the three Core Module subtests. The three subtests use three different answer formats. We checked each one against the official demo exam on 23 August 2026.

SubtestWhat you actually do
Figure SequencesSingle-choice from four options. Each option is a complete pair — matrix 5 and matrix 6 together. You do not pick them separately.
Mathematical EquationsNot multiple choice. You type a number for every variable on an on-screen keypad. No options are offered at all.
Latin SquaresA fixed answer column of A to E — five choices, always in that order, never four shuffled ones.

This matters more than it sounds. If you have practised Mathematical Equations as multiple choice, you have been training a skill the exam does not test: eliminating wrong options. In the real thing there is nothing to eliminate. You solve the system or you do not, and a partially correct answer earns nothing because every variable must be right. Our mental-math guide is written for the format as it actually is.

3. "The dMAT is a German medical admission test"

Wrong. That is the TMS, a completely different exam. The dMAT is an aptitude test sitting inside the APS document process for Indian graduates applying to German Master's programmes, and the fields it applies to are engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management — not medicine.

If anything, medicine applicants are among those unaffected by the dMAT requirement.

4. "The dMAT is a university entrance exam"

Wrong. It is an APS document. The dMAT does not replace APS verification, it does not replace anabin recognition, and it does not replace the admission decision of the German university you apply to. It is one more piece of paper inside the APS file.

The confusion is understandable, because g.a.s.t. — the TestDaF Institute in Bochum — also runs TestAS, which universities do use at admission stage. Same developer, different jobs. We set the two side by side in dMAT vs TestAS.

5. "You are exempt if your APS certificate was issued before 29 June 2026"

Close, but the date that counts is different. The exemption turns on when you submitted — when you completed APS online registration, or shipped your documents — not when a certificate was issued.

APS India's published position is that completing online registration before 29 June 2026 exempts you for that procedure, even if the hard copies were posted afterwards. Getting this backwards costs roughly ₹16,500 and a Sunday.

Borderline cases — integrated degrees, dual degrees, a B.Sc. in Data Science, Business Analytics — are decided on the exact wording printed on your certificate, not on what the programme is commonly called. If yours is arguable, email APS India and get the answer in writing before you pay anyone, us included. Check yours against our eligibility checker, then confirm it officially.

6. "A bad dMAT score will block your APS certificate"

Wrong. APS India has confirmed it does not. The dMAT is reported on a 0–200 scale with a mean of 100, it is centrally evaluated in Bochum, and it carries lifetime validity. A low score does not stop your APS certificate being issued.

What a score does or does not do at individual German universities is a separate question, and an open one: the scoring model has not been published and no university has a dMAT cohort to calibrate against yet. Anybody telling you a specific number is a "good score" for a specific programme is guessing. So is anybody who promises you one — including us. See what a dMAT score actually means.

7. "Guessing is risky — leave it blank if you are unsure"

Wrong, and expensive. There is no negative marking on any subtest. A blank scores exactly the same as a wrong answer: zero. The official guidance is explicit that you should answer even when you do not know.

At roughly 75 seconds per item across the Core Module, the only rational policy is to commit and move. Our guessing guide works through when to guess immediately rather than fight an item you are losing.

8. "You have to buy preparation material"

No, you do not, and we would rather say so. g.a.s.t. publishes free official preparatory material with solved sample tasks on d-mat.de. Several preparation providers, ourselves included, give away practice for free. Nobody is required to buy anything.

What paid practice buys you is volume and conditions — enough unseen items to stop pattern-matching from memory, under an enforced clock, with a worked solution on each one. That is a real thing to want. It is not a requirement, and any page that implies otherwise is selling to your anxiety rather than to your gap.

Why we can say all this

Two reasons, and you should weigh both.

The first is that we build the questions. To generate Figure Sequences items that have exactly one defensible answer, you have to encode the published rule set precisely — how figures accelerate by x+1, what happens at a boundary, why a figure can never switch from one diagonal to another. Our generator ships with a verifier that enumerates every rule consistent with the four visible matrices and rejects the item if they disagree about the hidden pair. Reading the rules is optional for a blog post. It is not optional for that.

The second is that we sat the official demo exam and wrote down what it did. That is how the answer formats above were established, on 23 August 2026, and it is the reason this page disagrees with most of the internet.

We are an independent preparation platform. We are not g.a.s.t., not APS India, and we have no inside line to either. Every practice question on this site is written by us, none of it is leaked or official, and we say so on every page. Where the official position is unknown — the scoring model, the 2027 sitting date — we say that too, instead of filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

Which subject module do Indian dMAT candidates take?

Every Indian candidate going through the APS India route sits the General Academic Module. It is the same module regardless of whether your bachelor's degree was in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business or management. Subject-specific modules exist but are used by individual German universities for particular programmes, not by APS India.

Are all dMAT questions multiple choice?

No. Only Figure Sequences is single-choice, with four options where each option is a complete pair of matrices 5 and 6. Mathematical Equations requires you to type a value for every variable with no options offered at all. Latin Squares uses a fixed answer column of A to E in that order.

Is the dMAT a medical entrance exam?

No. The German medical admission test is the TMS. The dMAT is an aptitude test that forms part of the APS documentation for Indian graduates applying to German Master's programmes in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management.

Does a low dMAT score stop me getting an APS certificate?

No. APS India has confirmed that a low dMAT score does not block issue of the APS certificate. The dMAT is an additional document within the process, not a pass-or-fail gate. Results are reported on a 0 to 200 scale with a mean of 100 and carry lifetime validity.

Should I guess on the dMAT if I do not know the answer?

Yes. There is no negative marking on any dMAT subtest, so a wrong answer and a blank both score zero. The official guidance is to answer rather than leave an item empty, and at roughly 75 seconds per question there is no time to be precious about it.

Do I have to buy dMAT preparation material?

No. g.a.s.t. publishes free official preparatory material with solved sample tasks on d-mat.de, and several providers including DMAT Club offer free practice. Paid material buys volume of unseen questions under timed conditions, which is useful, but it is not a requirement.

What is the dMAT exemption cut-off date?

29 June 2026. If you completed your APS online registration or shipped your documents before that date, you are exempt for that procedure. The date that counts is when you submitted, not when a certificate was issued.
