There is more than one way to be exempt from the dMAT, and the guides most people read do not say so.

As of 30 August 2026, one widely-read blog post from a large test-prep brand states only that students who submitted their APS application before 29 June 2026 are not required to take it. That is true, and it is one route out of several. A commerce graduate reading only that page, having registered with APS in July, would conclude they must sit an exam they may well be exempt from.

Every exemption route APS India publishes

1. You are not applying for a Master's. Bachelor's applicants and PhD applicants are not required to sit the dMAT under the current rules. This is the single largest exempt group and the one most often left off.

2. Your field is not on the affected list. The requirement covers engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management. Fields outside those groups are not automatically included — which in practice covers pharmacy, life sciences, architecture, law, education, pure sciences, arts and humanities.

3. You are on a confirmed exchange, double-degree or partnership programme. If you are applying through an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership, you are exempt. You submit confirmation from your home institution, the German partner or the programme coordinator with your APS documents.

4. Your APS was already in progress. Exempt if you completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026, or shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026. The submission date is what counts, not the date the certificate was issued.

5. You already hold an APS certificate. Existing certificate holders are not affected.

6. Your intake is Winter Semester 2026/27. The requirement begins with Summer Semester 2027. The first certificates are only available from 12 October 2026, so an earlier intake cannot require one.

The edge case that catches people: computer science

This one genuinely is ambiguous, and it is worth being precise rather than reassuring.

Computer Science and Engineering awarded as an engineering degree falls under the engineering group. A standalone B.Sc. Computer Science, BCA, or B.Sc. Information Technology is not automatically covered.

What decides it is the official title, branch or specialisation printed on your certificate and transcripts — not the subject you studied and not the word "Technology" or "Management" appearing somewhere in the name. APS India makes that determination, not you and not any checker tool including ours.

If you are unsure, ask in writing

This is the practical advice that matters more than any list. Email APS India, describe your degree exactly as it appears on the certificate, and get an answer in writing before you register.

The dMAT fee is EUR 150, roughly Rs 16,500. Sitting an exam you were exempt from is an expensive way to be cautious, and a written answer costs an email. Any tool that tells you definitively whether you are covered — including the eligibility checker on this site — is encoding published criteria, not making the decision.

Where to check

APS India publishes the affected-fields list as a versioned document, and g.a.s.t. publishes the exam-side rules. Those two are the sources worth acting on. Everything else, this page included, is somebody's reading of them.

Frequently asked questions

Are bachelor's students required to take the dMAT?

No. The dMAT applies to selected Master's applicants. Bachelor's applicants and PhD applicants are not required to sit it under the current rules.

Is BCA or B.Sc Computer Science covered by the dMAT requirement?

Not automatically. Computer Science and Engineering awarded as an engineering degree falls under the engineering group, while a standalone B.Sc Computer Science or BCA does not. The official title on your certificate decides it, and APS India makes the determination.

I registered with APS in July 2026. Am I exempt?

Not on timing grounds — the cut-off is 29 June 2026. But you may still be exempt on level, field or programme grounds. Check all the routes, then confirm with APS India in writing.

Does the dMAT apply to Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants?

No. The requirement starts with Summer Semester 2027. The first certificates are only available from 12 October 2026.
