dMAT Sample Paper: What Exists, and What to Use Instead

There is no official dMAT sample paper you can download, print and
sit. g.a.s.t. publishes task descriptions and preparatory material
explaining each format, but not a complete past paper, and it does not release
its item bank. Any site offering you "the dMAT sample paper" as a PDF is
offering you something reconstructed — which is fine, as long as they say
so.
We say so. Every question on this site is written by us, from the published
format rules. Nobody outside Bochum has the real items.
Why a PDF is the wrong format anyway.
The dMAT is a timed, digital, no-notes exam. A printed paper lets you take as
long as you like and scribble in the margin — training precisely the two
habits the exam forbids. A sample paper you sit comfortably teaches you almost
nothing about how you will do on the day.
What the questions actually look like
Core Module — three formats, 70 minutes
Figure Sequences. Four matrices are shown. Figures move,
rotate and change colour across them under a fixed rule set, including
acceleration by x+1 and bouncing off the boundary. You predict the next two.
Twenty items in 25 minutes.
Mathematical Equations. A small system where every letter
is a whole number from 1 to 20 and exactly one solution exists. The algebra is
easy; doing it in your head at speed is not. Twenty items in 25 minutes.
Latin Squares. A 5×5 grid holding A to E once per row
and column, with one cell marked. Easy grids resolve at a glance; hard ones need
three or four forced deductions held in working memory. Sixteen items in 20
minutes.
General Academic Module — 90 minutes
Short academic passages with single-choice questions on them, and
self-contained applied problems that state every formula and constant they need.
Drawn from eight subject areas, so you will meet fields that are not yours.

How to sit a sample paper so it tells you something
The score is not the point on a first attempt. What you want out of it is a
diagnosis, and you only get that if the conditions are honest:
Run the timer and obey it. Per subtest, not for the paper
as a whole.
Nothing to write on. No paper, no notes app, no calculator.
This is the constraint that surprises people most, and practising without it
inflates your score and teaches nothing.
Answer everything. There is no negative marking, so a blank
is a mark thrown away. See

Read every worked solution afterwards, including for the
ones you got right by guessing — especially those.
Then look at where the marks went, not at the total. Most people find one
module costs them and the other does not, and knowing which is the whole reason
to sit a sample paper this early.
Is there an official dMAT sample paper to download?
No. g.a.s.t. publishes task descriptions and preparatory material for each format but does not release a complete past paper or its item bank.
Are downloadable dMAT sample paper PDFs genuine?
They are reconstructions of the published format, not official items. A PDF also cannot enforce the timer or the no-notes rule, which are two of the things that make the exam hard.
Where can I try dMAT questions for free?
A 12-question timed practice test needs no account. A full-length mock of each module is free with an account, with a worked solution on every item.
Does the dMAT have negative marking?
No. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so leaving a question blank throws away an expected mark.
