The Day Before the dMAT

By · Founder, DMAT Club · Updated 30 August 2026

Exam facts verified 23 August 2026 against g.a.s.t. (d-mat.de) and APS India (aps-india.de). Answer formats checked against the official dMAT demo exam. The dMAT is a first-year exam and its rules move — confirm anything date-sensitive at the official source before you act on it.

Verified 23 August 2026 against g.a.s.t. and APS India.

On 25 September your score is very close to fixed. Nothing learned in the next twenty-four hours will be reliable under pressure the following morning, because new material needs sleep and repetition to become retrievable, and you have one night of the former and none of the latter.

That is not a counsel of despair. It means the day before has a different job from every other day of preparation, and doing that job well is worth more than cramming badly.

Do not sit a full mock

This is the most common mistake and the most expensive. A full-length mock the day before does one of two things. If it goes well, you learn nothing you did not already know. If it goes badly — and tired, anxious people score worse — you walk into the real exam having just proved to yourself that you cannot do it.

The score from a mock on 25 September carries almost no information about your score on 26 September 2026. It carries a great deal of emotional weight. That is a bad trade.

What is actually worth doing

Twenty minutes of light format review. Not practice questions under a clock. Just read back through the rules: the seven movement rules that Figure Sequences items are built from, the fact that Mathematical Equations wants a typed value for every letter rather than a choice from four options, the fixed A–E answer column on Latin Squares. You are refreshing recognition, not building it.

Rehearse the guessing rule until it is automatic. No negative marking, so no blanks, ever. Decide now what you will do when a Figure Sequences item defeats you at sixty seconds: eliminate what you can, pick, move on. Deciding this in advance means not spending exam time deciding it.

Handle the logistics so tomorrow has no decisions in it. Route to the centre and how long it takes at that time of day. The ID you registered with — the name has to match. Your confirmation. What you will eat, and when. None of this is exam preparation and all of it is score protection.

Sleep is a scoring strategy

The Core Module runs 70 minutes across three separately timed subtests, then a 30-minute break, then 90 minutes of the General Academic Module. That is roughly three and a half hours of sustained screen work with no notes to lean on.

Working memory is what the no-notes rule tests, and working memory is the first thing sleep deprivation takes. An extra hour of revision bought with an hour of sleep is a bad exchange on this exam specifically, because you cannot write anything down to compensate.

Stop reading about the exam

By 25 September you will have read a dozen pages about who needs the dMAT, what it costs and how it fits into APS. None of it is on the paper. If you catch yourself checking whether the rules have changed for the fifth time, that is anxiety, not preparation, and it has a cost in sleep.

Close the tabs. You know what the exam is. Tomorrow it is just three task types and a clock.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take a mock test the day before the dMAT?

No. A good score teaches you nothing new and a bad score — likely, because tired anxious people underperform — damages your confidence going into the real thing. Light format review is a better use of the day.

What should I revise the day before the dMAT?

Nothing new. Twenty minutes re-reading the task rules and the answer format of each subtest is enough. New material learned the day before will not be retrievable under pressure.

What do I need to bring to the dMAT test centre?

The identification you registered with, matching the name on your registration, and your confirmation. You may not bring notes, paper or a calculator to the desk. Confirm the current requirements on the official g.a.s.t. portal, as centre rules can change.

Checked the dMAT answer formats against the official demo exam on 23 August 2026 — which is how this site came to describe them differently from most published guides.
