Looking for dMAT Latin Squares tricks that work under exam conditions? The first thing to accept is the constraint that makes this subtest hard: you get no rough paper, no pen and no calculator, at any point. Every deduction happens in your head, on screen, with a clock running. That is a trainable skill, but only if you practise it the way the exam enforces it.
The good news is that Latin Squares is the most mechanical of the three Core Module subtests. There is no creativity in it. There is a procedure, and if you follow the procedure in the right order you will finish inside the time.
You are shown a 5×5 grid. Each of the letters A, B, C, D and E appears exactly once in every row and exactly once in every column. Some cells are filled. One cell is marked with a question mark. You identify the letter that belongs in it.
You get 16 questions in 20 minutes — 75 seconds each, the same budget as the rest of the Core Module. Official solution paths refer to columns as α, β, γ, δ, ε and rows as 1 to 5, which is worth knowing if you read the official preparatory material.

The single biggest time-waster is scanning the whole grid. You do not need the whole grid. You need the row and the column that intersect at the question mark, and nothing else, until those run out.
Easy items resolve here, in fifteen or twenty seconds. Bank that time. You will need it later.
Track the letters you have ruled out, not the letters that remain. Five letters is right at the edge of comfortable working memory, and holding "not A, not C, not D" is lighter than holding a shrinking list of candidates and re-deriving it each time you glance back at the screen.
Harder items will not resolve from the marked row and column alone. Two or three candidates survive. This is where most people stall and start guessing, and it is the part worth drilling.
The technique is the forced cell. Instead of solving the marked cell, find a different empty cell somewhere in the grid that has only one possible letter. Fill it mentally. That new letter now constrains its own row and column — which often eliminates one of your surviving candidates.

Hard items chain three or four of these in sequence. Each one is trivial. The difficulty is entirely in holding the chain in your head while the clock runs, which is a memory problem rather than a logic problem.
When you practise, force yourself to find the shortest chain that reaches the answer. A seven-step chain that arrives at the right letter is a failure in an exam that gives you 75 seconds. A three-step chain is a pass. This is the specific thing that improves with repetition.
Two facts change the maths here.
First, there is no negative marking anywhere in the dMAT. A blank scores exactly what a wrong answer scores: nothing. Never leave one empty.
Second, and this is the part most preparation material gets wrong: Latin Squares gives you a fixed answer column of A to E, in order. Five choices, not four, and they are not shuffled. So a blind guess is one in five, and every letter you have eliminated meaningfully improves that. If your scan has ruled out three letters in twenty seconds, guessing between the remaining two is a coin flip — a far better use of the next fifty seconds than a chain you are not going to finish.
The discipline that scores marks is knowing when to stop deducing and start eliminating.
