Searching GRE vs dMAT usually means someone is trying to work out which exam to sit. The honest answer is that the question contains a false assumption, and clearing it up saves both money and a lot of anxiety: the GRE and the dMAT are not alternatives. They answer to different bodies, at different stages, for different reasons. Some applicants need one, some need the other, and some need both.
The dMAT is a study-aptitude test developed and centrally evaluated by g.a.s.t., the TestDaF Institute in Bochum. APS India introduced it on 29 June 2026 as an additional document inside the existing APS verification process.
It is not a university entrance exam. No German university requires it as an admission test in its own right. It is a certificate that a defined group of applicants must produce as part of getting their APS certificate. Whether you sit it is not a choice — it depends entirely on whether you fall inside the criteria.
The GRE is set by ETS and is required by individual programmes at individual universities, typically in management, economics and some computer science degrees. Whether you need it depends on the specific programmes on your shortlist. Many German Master's programmes do not ask for it at all.
APS verifies your documents. Universities admit you. These are separate gates, and each has its own requirements.
A strong GRE score does not exempt you from the dMAT, and a dMAT certificate does not satisfy a programme that asks for the GRE.
Practise the real thing, free. Mock 1 is a full 56-question dMAT Core Module test with enforced per-subtest timers and a worked solution for every question. No hand-written PDFs — it runs in the browser under the same no-notes conditions as the exam. Attempt the free mock test.
Only if all four of these are true:
If any one of those is false, the dMAT does not apply to you. Applicants who registered with APS or posted documents before 29 June 2026 are exempt, as are existing APS certificate holders, bachelor's and PhD applicants, and exchange or double-degree students. Fields such as medicine, humanities, law and architecture are unaffected.
Some guidance treats BCA, standalone computer science and B.Sc Data Science as exempt. If your degree sits in that grey area, email APS India and get the answer in writing rather than relying on a forum post.
Work in this order:
If you need both, sit them separately and prepare for them separately. They test different things: the GRE is a long verbal-and-quantitative exam with rough paper permitted, while the dMAT Core Module is a short, visual, mental-only test of figure sequences, equation systems and Latin squares with no notes and no calculator. Practice for one is close to useless for the other.
The dMAT is in its first cycle, and first-year rules move. Verify anything date-sensitive against the official APS India and g.a.s.t. sources before you act on it, including anything you read here.
Everything above is a method, and a method you have only read is worth very little at 75 seconds a question. The only way it becomes usable is repetition under a clock, on a screen, with nothing to write on.
That is exactly what DMAT Club is. Mock 1 is free with an account — a full 56-question Core Module paper with enforced per-subtest timers. The full bundle carries 280 unique questions across five mocks with zero repeats, and every single item comes with a worked solution that derives the answer: the movement rule behind each figure, the substitution order for each equation, the forced deductions for each grid. No PDFs, no scanned answer keys.

No. They serve different purposes. The dMAT is an additional document inside the APS verification process, introduced by APS India on 29 June 2026. The GRE is an admission requirement set by individual university programmes. Neither substitutes for the other.
The question does not really apply, because universities do not choose between them. The dMAT is required by APS India for a defined group of applicants regardless of university, while GRE requirements are set programme by programme. Check each programme's own admissions page.
Possibly. If you meet all four dMAT criteria and your target programme also asks for the GRE, you would need both. Many German Master's programmes do not require the GRE at all, so check the specific programmes on your shortlist.
No. dMAT applicability is determined by the four criteria - Master's level, Summer Semester 2027 or later, a qualifying bachelor's field, and an APS process started on or after 29 June 2026 - and not by any other test score.
