Cancelling Your dMAT: Deregistration, Refunds and the Deadline

The right to deregister from the dMAT ends when registration ends. For the 2026 Indian cycle that is 15 September 2026. After that date there is no deregistration and no refund — not for a change of plan, not for missing the exam, and not for starting it and stopping.

This page sets out what the g.a.s.t. terms and conditions say, read on 11 September 2026. It is a summary of a document, not advice, and the document governs. We have never handled a dMAT registration, a fee or a refund, and we cannot process any part of this for you.

The two separate rights, which people confuse

There are two different ways out of a dMAT registration and they run on different clocks. Knowing which one you are inside decides how much money comes back.

The terms state the withdrawal right in capitals: the participant has the right to cancel the contract within 14 days without giving reasons, and all payments received by g.a.s.t. are refunded within 14 days of the notification of revocation being received.

Deregistration is the ordinary route and it costs you something. The terms say the amount is credited back minus an administrative fee of up to 15%. On a EUR 150 fee that is up to EUR 22.50 — so expect somewhere around EUR 127.50 back rather than the whole 150. If you paid in person at a test centre, the terms say the centre refunds you, with a corresponding administrative fee of up to 15%.

What gets you nothing

The terms are blunt about this, and it is one sentence covering three situations. If you deregister after the registration deadline, do not attend the examination, or discontinue the examination, the exam fee is not refunded.

• Deregistering late. After 15 September 2026 the route is closed.
• Simply not turning up. A no-show is not a cancellation. Nothing comes back, and nobody is obliged to ask you why.
• Starting and stopping. Walking out during the exam is treated the same way as not attending.

So if you know on 20 September that you cannot sit it, there is no financial decision left to make — only whether you attend. Given that no second sitting has been confirmed for the 2026 cycle, and that the fee is gone either way, sitting it and getting a score is usually the better of two poor options. A low score does not on its own block an APS certificate; see what the score means.

Where to do it, and where not to

Deregistration happens in the g.a.s.t. participant portal. Not by email, not by telling your test centre, not through a consultancy, and not by replying to a confirmation message. An email that nobody actions is indistinguishable from a no-show once the deadline passes, and the deadline will pass while you wait for a reply.

The same applies in the other direction: no preparation provider can register you, cancel for you, or influence a refund. That includes us. If anybody offers to, treat the offer as a reason to stop dealing with them.

If you registered and then found you are exempt

This happens more than it should, because the exemption rules are wider than most published guides say. If you completed APS registration or shipped your documents before 29 June 2026, or you fall under one of the other exemptions, you may not need the exam at all — and the deregistration window is the only chance to get most of the fee back.

Check the exemptions most guides leave out and the eligibility checker before 15 September rather than after it. Roughly half the people who look into the dMAT do not need to sit it.

What the terms do not settle

Two things we could not answer from the published terms, and are not going to invent:

• Moving to a different test centre after booking. Contact details can be updated until the deadline; a centre change is not described. See test centres in India.
• Rescheduling to another date. With a single sitting in the 2026 cycle there is no other date to move to, so the question mostly does not arise this year. The terms do describe a right to retake where a technical defect affects the exam.
